The rules in NYC
What the FDNY requires
The five boroughs follow the New York City Fire Code, which is separate from the rest of the state and enforced by the FDNY.
Enforced by the FDNY Bureau of Fire Prevention under the New York City Fire Code.
Only FDNY-approved companies can service extinguishers in the five boroughs. FDNY tags are numbered and issued only to certified companies, so a missing or out-of-date tag is one of the most common reasons for an FDNY violation.

Fire extinguisher inspection in NYC: what to know
Your staff should check every unit once a month and initial the tag. Once a year an FDNY-approved company must service each extinguisher and put on a new FDNY tag. Dry chemical units also need internal maintenance every 6 years, and every extinguisher needs a hydrostatic test every 5 or 12 years, depending on its type.
Only an FDNY-approved company, and the technician must hold an FDNY W-96 Certificate of Fitness. Central Fire is an FDNY approved extinguisher company (No. 349W) and hangs an FDNY tag on every unit we service.
The tag the FDNY requires on every serviced extinguisher. It shows the servicing company, the service date and the technician's Certificate of Fitness number. Tags are numbered and issued only to approved companies, and FDNY inspectors check them.
