Fire extinguisher inspection on Long Island: what to know
Your staff should check every extinguisher once a month: in place, gauge in the green, pin and seal intact, tag dated and initialed. Once a year a licensed company must inspect and service each unit and hang a new tag. Dry chemical units also need internal maintenance every 6 years, and every extinguisher needs a hydrostatic test every 5 or 12 years, depending on its type.
In Nassau County, the company must be licensed by the Nassau County Fire Marshal and the technician must hold a Nassau Certificate of Fitness. In Suffolk County, every technician needs a Suffolk County license, and servicing without one is a misdemeanor. Central Fire holds both: Nassau License PEL000000276 and Suffolk County License 202.
The technician checks that each unit is the right type for the area, mounted at the right height and easy to reach, fully charged, and free of damage. The pin, seal, hose and nozzle are checked, the unit is weighed or the gauge read, and a new tag is hung showing the date, the technician and our license. Anything that fails is recharged, serviced or replaced on the spot or on a return visit.
Yes. A commercial kitchen needs a Class K extinguisher within 30 feet of the cooking equipment, in addition to the kitchen hood suppression system.
