Fire extinguishers: the rules
What New York City requires
Enforced by the FDNY Bureau of Fire Prevention under the New York City Fire Code.
Only FDNY-approved companies can service extinguishers in the five boroughs. FDNY tags are numbered and issued only to certified companies, so a missing or out-of-date tag is one of the most common reasons for an FDNY violation.

Fire extinguishers in New York City: what to know
Only an FDNY-approved company, and the technician doing the work must hold an FDNY W-96 Certificate of Fitness. Central Fire is an FDNY approved extinguisher company (No. 349W) and puts an FDNY tag on every extinguisher we service.
It is the tag the FDNY requires on every serviced extinguisher. It shows the servicing company, the date of service and the technician's Certificate of Fitness number. Tags are numbered and issued only to certified companies, and inspectors check them.
Your staff should check every unit once a month and initial the tag. Once a year an FDNY-approved company must service each unit and put on a new FDNY tag. Dry chemical units also need internal maintenance every 6 years, and every extinguisher needs a hydrostatic pressure test every 5 or 12 years, depending on its type.
Yes. A commercial kitchen needs at least one Class K extinguisher within 30 feet of the cooking equipment, in addition to the kitchen hood suppression system.
