Questions
NYC building violations: what to know
Each city agency keeps its own records. Buildings violations and complaints are on the DOB website, housing violations are on HPD Online, and summonses heard at OATH (the old ECB) are searchable by address or summons number. Fire violations are not all posted online, so it is worth checking with someone who works with FDNY. Violation Alerts will check these records for you every day.
An ECB violation is a summons from a city agency such as DOB or FDNY that is heard at OATH, the city's hearing office. It used to be called the Environmental Control Board, which is where the name comes from. It can carry a fine, and many also require proof that the condition was fixed.
If nobody shows up or responds by the hearing date, the case is usually decided against you by default, often at the highest penalty. The violation also stays open until the condition is fixed and proof is accepted. Hearing reminders are one of the things Violation Alerts will send.
Fix the condition, then give FDNY proof by the date on the notice, such as a certificate of correction or a new inspection tag. If it is a summons, it may also have a hearing. Central Fire handles fire extinguisher and fire safety violations from start to finish. Send us the notice and we will tell you what it needs and what it costs.
We are building it now. It will be priced per building with a low monthly fee. Everyone on the waitlist hears first, with no payment and no commitment to join the list.
